Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) pairs a prescribed dose of ketamine with psychotherapy. I offer it in Goodlettsville, mostly for people who have already done real work in therapy and have not gotten the relief they hoped for. I handle the therapy. A medical provider handles the ketamine.
What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?
KAP combines the rapid-acting effects of ketamine with the deep, transformative work of psychotherapy. During a KAP session, a low dose of ketamine is administered under medical supervision, creating a state where you can more easily access and process your inner thoughts and emotions. The combination of ketamine with therapy has been shown to be more effective than ketamine alone.
How it works here
- We start with ordinary therapy. I need a couple of sessions to understand what you are working on and whether KAP makes sense for you at all.
- If it looks like a fit, I refer you to Journey Clinical for a full medical assessment. Their medical team decides whether ketamine is appropriate for you, writes the prescription, and monitors you. That decision is theirs.
- Dosing sessions happen in my office on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons. They run considerably longer than a standard session, and you will need someone to drive you home.
- We meet again afterward to make sense of what came up. This part matters more than the dosing session itself, and skipping it wastes the work.
What to know before you ask about it
- Medical oversight is separate from therapy. Screening, prescribing, and monitoring are handled by Journey Clinical, a medical provider that specializes in this work. Whether ketamine is safe for you is their call, not mine.
- The therapy is the point. Research on ketamine paired with psychotherapy generally reports better results than ketamine on its own. The sessions before and after the dosing session are where the work actually happens.
- It is not a fit for everyone, and it is not a shortcut. Some people notice change quickly, some do not, and some should not take ketamine at all.
If you are considering it
The honest first step is a conversation, not a booking. Tell me what you have already tried and what you are hoping will be different, and I will tell you whether I think KAP is worth exploring in your case or whether something else would serve you better.
